Electric cooking solutions accelerating access to clean cooking in Kenya
The Modern Cooking Facility for Africa (MCFA) is supporting the Kenyan company SCODE in scaling up access to electric cooking solutions across the country.

MCFA has signed its seventh portfolio company agreement in Kenya with SCODE Limited. The company has worked to accelerate access to clean energy in Kenya since 1996 —initially as a non-governmental organisation, and since 2008 as a registered company selling various clean energy products, including more recently electric pressure cookers to expand access to clean cooking in the country.
With approx. EUR 500,400 in MCFA funding, SCODE plans to expand its operations and distribution network and sell electric pressure cookers to grid-connected customers in Kenya, starting from the Rift Valley region. The aim is to distribute up to 96,400 clean cooking products by the end of 2029, providing over 360,000 people in Kenya with access to clean cooking.
“The MCFA support will enable us to scale up the distribution and sales of highly energy‑efficient, digitised electric pressure cookers across the Kenyan market and deliver an inclusive e‑cooking experience to Kenyan households,” comments John Maina, CEO of SCODE.
SCODE plans to sell two different models of electric pressure cookers (EPCs). The Pawapot EPC is designed by SCODE and customised to suit most Kenyan households. The other model, the Tefal Effi Cook Electric Pressure Cooker, is also suitable for the majority of families in the country.
SCODE will offer its electric pressure cookers with flexible repayment options through mobile money, making the products more affordable for customers. All cookers are sold with an integrated usage-monitoring device, enabling SCODE to leverage carbon finance to support its business operations in the future.
By the end of 2025, MCFA had contracted 22 companies across six project countries, including seven in Kenya. SCODE was shortlisted under the second funding round (MCFA2) under the Scale-up Funding Window. The selection process included third‑party evaluations of the final applications by independent experts and a detailed due‑diligence assessment carried out by Danish Energy Management in consortium with LFS Advisory.
