Pamoja Moçambique Limitada, a subsidiary of the Swedish renewable energy company Pamoja Cleantech AB, entered the clean cooking market in Mozambique in 2018 with the aim of utilising cashew shell waste as a sustainable fuel source to enhance access to clean cooking solutions across the country. With MCFA support, the company plans to expand its distribution network and fuel production in Mozambique.

Pamoja will offer stoves enabled by stove use monitoring (SUM), paired with its own sustainably produced biomass-based fuel, under a pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) model, making clean cooking more affordable and accessible to low-income households. Currently, the company has its first processing facility in Nampula and plans, with the new funding, to establish an industrial fuel production facility.

“The MCFA financing will help us increase product affordability, expand our distribution channels, and strengthen our sustainable fuel supply chains, replacing charcoal and firewood and helping to combat deforestation,” says Nicolas Fouassier, CEO of Pamoja.

With approx. EUR 1.1 million in MCFA funding from Norway, Pamoja targets sales of up to 40,000 clean cooking services by the end of 2029, providing up to 180,800 people with access to clean cooking and improved health outcomes in suburban and rural areas in Nampula and Maputo provinces.

In addition to environmental and health benefits, the project is expected to support local agriculture value chains and create new job opportunities in Mozambique.

By the end of June 2026, MCFA had contracted a total of 24 companies across six project countries, including this new project in Mozambique. Pamoja was shortlisted under the second funding round (MCFA2) under the Scale-up Funding Window, targeting more mature companies with the potential to scale existing operations or enter new markets in an MCFA project country. The selection process included third‑party evaluations of the final applications by independent experts and a detailed due‑diligence assessment carried out by Danish Energy Management, in consortium with LFS Advisory.
